Epoxies are polymer materials that begin as liquids and are chemically changed into a solid. An epoxy based polymer is mechanically strong, chemically resistant to degradation of the chemical elements in the solid form and highly adhesive during conversion from liquid to solid. There are a wide range of basic epoxy chemicals from which an epoxy system can be formulated.
Physically epoxy systems contain two components, resins and a hardeners. The resin component is usually light, sometimes almost clear colored and almost odour free. Hardeners are usually dark and have a slight odor. When these two components are mixed, they will chemically and bond together and once the chemical reaction has finished, they will form a strong and rigid plastic material.


Applications of epoxy based materials are extensive and include coatings, adhesives and composite materials like carbon fiber and glass-reinforced plastic (although polyester, vinyl ester, and other thermosetting resins are also used for glass-reinforced plastic). Epoxies are known for their excellent adhesion, chemical and heat resistance, good to excellent mechanical properties and very good electrical insulating properties.

Terrazzo is a composite material, poured in place or precast, which is used for floor and wall treatments. It consists of marble, quartz, granite, glass, or other suitable chips, sprinkled or unsprinkled, and poured with a binder that is cementitious, chemical, or a combination of both. Terrazzo is cured and then ground and polished to a smooth surface or otherwise finished to produce a uniformly textured surface.

Epoxy flake broadcast system:


Epoxy flake systems are a decorative seamless epoxy flooring system with vinyl chips broadcast into it. Typically the system consists of a primer, opaque or pigmented epoxy receiving coat, broadcast coloured vinyl chips and a clear epoxy or urethane topcoat. Epoxy flake systems are available in both standard coloured chips and custom mixes can also be created using standard solid colors or pre-mixed blends.
Vinyl chips can be broadcast into a receiving coat based on desired end look. The chips can be broadcast from a range of a few random chips per square foot into a pigmented receiving coat to complete chip coverage, which can be broadcast into a clear opaque or pigmented epoxy receiving coat.


The top coat(s) lock the vinyl chips in place. One to two topcoats are designed to hold the vinyl chips in place. One epoxy or urethane lock coat is more economical and will leave an aggressive skid resistant finish, however it will be more difficult to clean. Two topcoats will make the system smoother, providing a less resistant floor, but will be easier to clean.
